Reading between the lines is a key life skill never mind business skill! From the early days of working out what the girlfriend meant by “no” maybe and okay then”. No being the only one that had a definitive meaning when it was uttered horizontally, when it was issued whilst vertical in a cake shop queue it was much less reliable as a statement of honest intent. Right up to those people at the conference that say that would love to hear from you at some stage in the future, as long of course as the future is measured in light years.
There are many things that rarely mean what they appear; Kylie is not actually “wicked”, unless of course you’re some kind of religious fundamentalist, in which case that may well be your view. Quality is a bad name to have in an hotel, inevitably it means quite the opposite. Likewise vendors with “Tasty” in the name, tastes like cardboard more like, and the worst one of all ? It has to be “Value” Anything that describes its-self as “Best value” usually means that your purse is about to be emptied faster than Msr Thernadier himself could manage ( Wicked Les Mis reference !! )
People in business do things for one reason, money, there is but never another reason, they will talk about reducing costs, streamlining and gaining efficiency, but what it actually means is that getting rid of Maggie in accounts means they can magically transfer almost her entire salary into their entirely un-justifiable over-inflated annual bonus.
There are a few people out there who actually mean what they say, whose opinion is formed from fact and experience, and who will answer a question with honesty and the best of intent, regard them as almost magical, wizard-like, rare and to be protected from the big bad world, because their honesty and integrity are rocks on which to build almost anything in business. I could name a few of them, but I won’t, they are my little gems, the treasures that sustain me when I’m listening to yet more corporate BS, watching another dreamer with a dark secret laying a web of nonsense to catch out the unwary.
If this sounds a bit darker than the norm, its probably because one of the good guys gave up the ghost today and decided to “Seek New Opportunities” and lets face it, we all know what that really means.
The good guys don’t always win, its down to us to choose to do things the right way, if we don’t ultimately we all lose.
Good luck Mr D, the wizards are right behind you!
